Erotic Art of Egon Schiele
I am attracted to the work of Egon Schiele on several levels, after befriending and studying with Klimt,
he had a pervasive effect on the explosion of interest in intimate and erotic art in the early 20th Century.
Briefly imprisoned for "Exhibiting erotic drawings in a place accessible to children", both Schiele's
work and his lifestyle were topics of heated discussion in the artistic communities of his day, and lead the way for
others to experiment with the Erotic in their work as part of the Art Nouveau
Movement.
Tragically we lost Egon at age 28 along with his wife Gertrude in the Spanish influenza pandemic of 1918.
Also attractive in the work of Egon Schiele is the anger, confusion, and gender identity
questions sensed in his works as reflected in the many self portraits he composed.
When Schiele was 15 years old, his father
died of syphilis, and he became a ward of his uncle (his mother's
brother). His Guardian recognized his passion and talent for art. In
1906 Schiele studied at Kunstgewerbeschule (the School of Arts and
Crafts) in Vienna.
In less than a year Schiele was sent, at the insistence of several
faculty members, to the more traditional Akademie der Bildenden
Künste (Academy of Fine Arts) in Vienna in 1906. There, he studied
painting and drawing, but was frustrated by the school’s
conservatism.
